About Timaya

The 45-year-old Nigerian musician and businessman was born on August 15, 1977. Enetimi Alfred Odon goes by the stage name Timaya.

He hails from Bayelsa State, Nigeria Timaya started the Dem Mama record label and is known for popular hit songs like I can’t kill myself and Plantain Boy.

Early Life

The singer wasn’t brilliant in school so he decided to pursue his dreams of becoming one of Nigeria’s biggest artists.

It wasn’t all rosy when he started out his music career; he encountered a lot of challenges he had to begin selling plantain on the streets of Mgbuosimini just to survive.

Reports state that after he was thrown out by his landlord because he couldn’t afford to pay the house rent, he had a life with an older woman who demands sexual favors from him.

Timaya stated in an interview that the pain he passed through was nasty but it’s all in the past now. For three years, Timaya served as a backup singer for Idris Abdulkareem’s group.

He auditioned for a talent hunt event organized by Nigeria’s popular actress, Hilda Dokubo before he rose to stardom.

Later in Life

He went through rigorous training throughout the hunt and on the last day, Timaya completely lost his voice. He however found favor when one of the judges called him to join his record label.

Timaya started off his career at the age of 27 when he recorded Dem Mama at his studio. As an upcoming singer, his boss wasn’t really interested in him so he left with the demo CD of his songs.

He made a crazy move when he released over 5000 copies of his song and distributed them free of charge on the streets of Port Harcourt with the hope that his songs meets the right audience.

Top marketers like Danco, T-joe, and Obiano helped distribute and sold his song. Over the years, Timaya’s music has evolved with genres ranging from dancehall, afrobeat, hip-hop, reggae, and soca.

He is also a songwriter and music producer who has worked with big names like Jarrett Holt and Eulonzo Jordan. He has sold over 30 million copies of his songs, going on tours, and performed on stages across the world.
