Egede Orientation Class: The Neo-Black Movement, also known as the Black Axe, began at the University of Benin in the late 1970s and is still active today on campuses like the University of Calabar and others.
Its motto is “‘Ayei! Axemen,'” and its symbol is an upright axe with a large blade fastened to a short handle. On their letterhead, the members’ slogan, “Aye Axemen,” is printed, while a circular addressed to the administration of the University of Ilorin was signed by “Landlords” and attributed to the Black Axe.
The organization’s initial mission to advance black awareness and fight for Africans’ independence from neo-colonialism and their dignity has devolved into self-serving behavior that is “notoriously and brutally aggressive.”
History of Egede Orientation Class
He asserts that the cult’s official policy is now to use violence. The members of the Axemen fraternity refer to one another as “‘Axeneb’ or the butcher,” and they take pride in their propensity to incite violence on campus.
Wearing black slacks, a long-sleeved white shirt, a black coat with the axe logo on the front and back, and a black beret with a yellow ribbon wound around it, they can be identified as confraternity or cult members by their attire.
Members have also been known to use charms and what Offiong refers to as “fetish rituals” to acquire supernatural strength and gain a defense against other members and law enforcement.
Size of Membership
Offiong explains the Black Axe membership’s tiny size—roughly 200 people—by the organization’s designation as an ethnic fraternity.
Members of new chapters typically come from the dominant ethnic community that surrounds the campus where the chapter is located.
However, more recently, a suspected cult member who was apprehended in February 2004 for his role in a. Fatal shooting told authorities that the Kwara Polytechnic in Ilorin’s Black Axe chapter had 500 members.
Initiation of Egede Orientation Class
The ceremonies are described as “gruesome, bloody, and barbaric” by Sam O. He also claims that, in keeping with their secrecy, the ceremonies take place in forests or cemeteries. Typically around a bonfire, and include dancing, singing, drug use, and the rape of women.
Offiong says that new member initiations take place in all fraternities on Saturdays at midnight. Before being escorted to the “island,” or initiation site. Initiates in some cults must go through what Offiong refers to as the “test of manhood,” which entails being flogged. Kicked, and struck with belts and sticks while in their underwear.
Around a bonfire, the initiates swear an oath of secrecy, don their fraternity robes, and receive a new name. Sign a membership scroll and provide their thumbprint in blood.
When the new recruits are introduced to the larger group, drinking, dancing, and drug use. And drumming starts, and the night ends in the early hours of the morning with a procession.

Black Axe Confraternity Cult Violence by State
The Nigerian Ministry of Education reported an increase in cult-related violence in tertiary campuses across the country on September 22, 2008. (Nigeria 22 Sept. 2008).
Abuja
A student from a cult at the University of Abuja was reportedly hurt in a 2009 fight between the Black Axe and Vikings fraternities (7 May 2009). Additionally, according to Vanguard, a member of the University of Abuja Black Axe was detained in 2009 for the attempted ransom kidnapping of two ministers (18 Sept. 2009).
Delta
Cult activities, including those of the Black Axe Confraternity, have reportedly reached an “alarming” level in Delta state and are “shockingly uninterrupted across the various higher institutions in the state,” according to an Abuja-based publication. Unconfirmed sources claim that five persons also perished.
Edo State
Media sources in Benin City, Edo State, reported on cult conflicts between the Black Axe and Eiye [also known as Eye and Aiye] fraternities.
Recruitment
Offiong’s assertion appears to be supported by the confession of the alleged Black Axe member. Who was detained in February 2004 and who claims to have been “forcefully inducted” into the gang by his companion.
Offiong claims that the cult’s methods, which include propaganda, deceit, and psychological warfare, primarily target first-year students by portraying the campus atmosphere as hostile and students as in need of protection.
Newspaper reports, however, claim that cults have recently started recruiting in secondary schools as well. The cults reportedly use bulletins to promote task-specific. Cult members by making friends with prospective members in order to persuade them to join.
They also have membership applications that prospective members can complete. An application for the Black Axe was discovered by security personnel at the University of Nigeria‘s Enugu Campus when they seized a car used by the shooters on campus.
If a potential member refuses to fill out and return an application form after receiving one, the cult members will intimidate him and label him as their adversary until he caves in and join the Egede Orientation Class out of fear.
According to a 1998 A. Adebanjo story in Tell Magazine, which Smash references, opposing the cults is risky since the cult members. Have permanently disabled individuals who do so and give people a good reason to be afraid of them.
